County Longford Scuba Divers will be hosting a fun swim event in Clondra on Saturday 13th August to promote the sport of snorkelling.
This event follows the success of the last two years where over 40 participants of all ages took to the water at Burke’s Lock and more stayed on the banks to offer support.
“This year we are hoping for even bigger numbers. The interest has been great and anyone who participated last year is sure to come back ” said Rose Kane, snorkelling officer of the Longford Scuba Divers.
Last year’s participants came from surrounding diving clubs in the Midlands region, such as Longford, Roscommon, Athlone, Lanesboro, Banagher, Mullingar and Leitrim, as well as some from the Dublin area. Some of the images can be seen below
“This year we are expecting local triathlon clubs and swimming clubs to join us,” continued Rose. “ We look forward to welcoming anyone who has an interest in snorkelling to come along and try it out in a safe, controlled but also fun environment.”
The swim will start at Burke’s Lock in the Shannon and will finish at Lock 46 of the Royal Canal at Richmond Harbour, spanning 900 metres in all.
This event has been supported by Waterways Ireland, who will close the waterway to allow the swimmers’ safe passage. Longford Tourism, Longford County Council, Shannonside and the Irish Underwater Council have helped to promote and organise the swim.
“McPartlands, Supervalu and Pat The Baker have also been very generous with their help”, Rose acknowledged.
Rose is grateful for the local support and interest in the scuba diving club. “We hold a flag day and church gate collection annually for our Search & Rescue Unit. We very much appreciate this support. Our Fin Swim is a way to showcase our sport in a positive way and to encourage new members.”
The minimum age required to take part in the swim is 12 years old, and young participants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants require their own wetsuit, but the rest of the equipment will be supplied.
Registration is at 1pm at Richmond Harbour, Clondra. There will be a barbeque at Richmond Harbour after the event. Entry is free for those who take part and is €5 otherwise.
